(January 25, 2008) When most of us think of diseases linked to women, heart disease is not the first thing that comes to our mind; however, it is the number one killer of women in America. Statistics from the American Heart Association show that over half a million women in America lose their lives to heart disease each year which equals out to about one death a minute. February is designated as American Heart Month which has helped to initiate the Go Red for Women Campaign to create a “louder” voice for women to be aware of the importance of being heart healthy!
Heart Disease which includes cases such as heart attack and stroke is ageless. Often times women develop bad habits at younger ages that lead to the larger problems in the future (for example lack of exercise, smoking, unhealthy eating habits). Heart disease is chronic and it continues to worsen, unless steps are taken to combat it. According to the Heart Truth website, 1 in 8 women age 45-64 have coronary heart disease and this value increases to 1 in 4 for women over age 65. The good news is that it is never too late to start making the lifestyle changes that can help to slow the processes of heart disease in women.
As a woman, only you can love your heart by helping to control some factors of heart disease. These risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes. It is important to be aware of your numbers for these risk factors and have them checked regularly by your physician to stay on track with your heart health.
The Lewis County Extension Office and PrimaryPlus want to promote healthy hearts and healthy women by hosting Love Your Heart Day on Friday, February 8th. The day will include two sessions at the Lewis County Extension Office—a FREE women’s heart screening from 8AM-10AM and a FREE women’s luncheon from 11:45 AM to 1:15 PM. The heart healthy screening will test cholesterol (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL), triglycerides, glucose, plus blood pressure, Height/Weight/BMI, and Body Fat %. The event will also offer nutritional counseling and heart healthy education. Participants who wish to participate in blood work must be fasting (no food or drink after midnight, but it is suggested that you do take medication with water before the screening). Following the health screenings, a luncheon showcasing guest speakers Dr. Sarah Porter and dietitian, Martha Parker, both part of the PrimaryPlus network. The first 50 women who attend both the screening and the luncheon will be given a Go-Red for women t-shirt.

(February 4, 2008) More than 8 million women are living with heart disease in the United States, according to the Heart Truth Campaign sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. This leading killer of women has provoked much attention over the course of the last several years in an urgency to increase awareness among women. Together, the Lewis County Extension Office and PrimaryPlus, want to help in combating the rising heart disease trends in our area by hosting Love Your Heart Day on Friday, February 8th.
Love Your Heart Day plans to be filled with everything to help women better love themselves and their hearts. The first step in decreasing heart disease is to “know your numbers,” such as cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index, etc. The Lewis County Extension Office and PrimaryPlus have worked to ensure that participants of Love Your Heart Day will be offered a wide variety of screenings that will make them heart smart! Screenings will be held from 8AM to 10AM on Friday, February 8th at the Extension Office which will include testing cholesterol (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL), triglycerides, glucose, plus blood pressure checks, height/weight/Body Mass Index, etc. Please note that the blood work requires participants to fast (no food or drink after midnight, but it is suggested you take medication with water before the screening). The test will be conducted with just a finger stick and results will be available within 5 minutes. Also featured in the screenings will be consultations on healthy eating habits and educational material on heart disease.
Another important aspect of the day will include a Healthy Heart Luncheon from 11:45AM to 1:15PM on Friday the 8th at the Extension Office. The luncheon will include free lunch, presentations by Dr. Sarah Porter and Dietitian-Martha Parker, plus door prizes. The first 50 women who attend both sessions will be given a Go-Red for Women T-Shirt.
