PrimaryPlus-OB/GYN Welcomes new Midwifery Services with Becky Hogge, CNM, ARNP

(June 4, 2010)  It has always been a goal of PrimaryPlus to offer a comprehensive range of services throughout the many fields of medicine.  PrimaryPlus-OB/GYN is excited to announce its latest additions to its obstetrics department—midwifery care with Becky Hogge, CNM, ARNP.  Although midwives have been around for centuries, it is the first time in the history of PrimaryPlus-OB/GYN to offer this form of care to the women of the area.  The new addition brings much new joy to our medical family, just as a new baby brings joy to its family!

Becky Hogge, is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Nurse Practitioner.  She is a proud graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and Frontier School of Nurse Midwifery in Hyden, KY.  For over ten years, Becky has been a practicing midwife serving women throughout our Kentucky region.  Becky’s passion for healthcare and compassion for women has made her a true asset to the PrimaryPlus-OB/GYN team of medical providers.  “The birth of each child is a miracle that I am honored to be a part of.  We are so fortunate that a family is willing to share their little miracles with us...” states Becky Hogge, CNM, ARNP.  Although, midwifery care is often associated with child birth and prenatal care, she also provides a complete range of women’s health services including yearly exam, birth control methods, menopausal counseling, etc.

Since joining PrimaryPlus at the beginning of May, Becky has already delivered several new bundles of joy at Meadowview Regional Medical Center.  With midwifery being an unfamiliar service to many in the region, PrimaryPlus felt it important to inform the community about the new service.  Becky states that it is important for the patient to feel confident and comfortable with her provider, no matter whether it be a physician, midwife, nurse practitioner, etc.  Midwives and Obstetricians offer nearly the same kind of care.  The main difference is that midwives assist in normal births, referring abnormal or risky pregnancies to OB/GYNs, and that midwives can’t do surgical procedures, such as caesarean sections.  At PrimaryPlus, their experienced and compassionate physicians work as a TEAM...to ensure the best care for both mom and baby.

Both CNMs and OB/GYN’s have to contend with misconceptions about the care they provide.  One of the first is that people associate CNM’s with natural-type childbirth.  However, CNM’s are there to support them through the birth process with the type of pain control they choose whether natural, medications for pain or an epidural.  CNM’s feel the birth process is about the patient and her family.  OB/GYN’s and CNM’s have the same main objective--a healthy mom and baby.  Another common misconception is the old-school concept of “granny midwives.”  Centuries ago, these were the women that had no formal medical training and delivered babies at home—training was then passed from generation to generation.  Today, this is no longer the case...certified nurse midwives  must first be a registered nurse, who then attends a  2 year CNM school for specialized training  in the care of women and their babies.  Certified Nurse Midwives also work closely with physicians throughout the prenatal care and delivery process, especially if medical issues may arise.

Certified Nurse Midwives have a unique approach to care—they often see their patients as family!  Together the mother and CNM build a personal relationship centered around wellness based care.  CNM’s look at birth as a normal process.  A lot of women feel that birth is normal and don’t want to be “made sick.”  They want the personal care of a CNM, someone who will sit and talk with her to answer questions.  Sometimes patients feel more at ease with someone who is not a physician.  Often, midwives have more time to talk with their patients making them more relaxed during their visit.

PrimaryPlus is very excited to welcome Becky Hogge, CNM, ARNP and her midwifery skills to the PrimaryPlus family.  As a federally qualified health center, PrimaryPlus prides itself on offering the most advanced health care services at affordable pricing by accepting KY Medicare/Medicaid, CareSource, Molina, most insurance, and a sliding fee scale for the underinsured.  An on-site pharmacy is an added benefit of the organization offering discounts on prescriptions for PrimaryPlus patients.  PrimaryPlus ALWAYS WELCOMES NEW PATIENTS, for more information or to schedule an appointment call 606-759-5331 (OB/GYN) or 606-759-0433 (Family Health), visit www.primaryplus.net
